Clouds are an illusion: billions of microscopic droplets of water scattering light and creating a whiteness — or sometimes a grayness or pinkness or purpleness — you can see with your eyes. They’re there, so big in the sky, but then a plane flies through them like they’re nothing. Like when you’re roasting marshmallows over a campfire and the skewer goes straight through the smoke. There and not there.
Clouds are an illusion, which is why Nick should have plunged straight through one. Instead he is floating on a giant cotton candy marshmallow two thousand feet above sea level, somehow not falling to his death.

“Girls,” she coos, “I brought you something.”
We scooch back farther. We scooch until our butts are smooshed against the wall and our tails are trampled beneath our back paws.
“Kitties,” she tries, “where are my cute little kitties?”
Our bodies push back but there’s nowhere left to scooch.
Yes, we are cute little kitties! But not for scary, awful, no-good Seiko.
